It's a type of primula probably a cultivated form allied to the wild oxlip as to the species can't say as there are hundreds of species.
Edit: Probably (don't quote me) Primula auricular which has either purple or yellow flowers.

That reminds me of a hyacinth might be able to tell when the flowers open fully, unless you guys know better are they growing from bulbs?

No idea!!! They were here before me! I've suggested splitting them a little once they've finished flowering as they're all clumped up. My m-i-l may know what they are but she can't really come round and tell me!
