    Loneliness

I think my depression and horrible thoughts almost always stem from feeling lonely and bored.
Does anyone have any tips on how to beat this?
I know, I know, "get out and meet new people" is what everyone says, but I can be very shy and have no self confidence these days....
I do have friends and still socialise with them sometimes but they're all so family oriented towards their kids etc it's hard to see them more than maybe once a month.

Have you thought about doing some courses/studying something you’re interested in? Sometimes doing something like that can get you in touch with people with similar interests
The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.

Or social meets from things like meetup?
Do a little of something that makes you happy every day!

I am the same. When alone my mind fixated on the bad stuff. My psychotherapist told me I need to go out and do stuff and I need a routine. An exercise or mindfulness class is good as it gets you out and helps with mh (note to self, I must go back to tai chi). Sometimes I find I can lose myself in a good film and stop the racing thoughts. Do you have hobbies. Basically when lonely you need distraction techniques.

I know exactly what you mean. I've been the same for many years and it is very difficult.

As the contributor above mentioned distraction techniques are the best. Different environments, exercise, something spontaneous, good reading material or just something out of the routine can possibly help ruminating…

Hobbies whether it is crosswords, jigsaws, reading, gardening, making models all these things help.
77 and counting, less of the "Old" call me "Mike"
