Bless you.

needs to be long enough for both sides to reach waistish once drapped round neck.

to cast off knit two stitches onto needle then slip first stitch over the second and off the end of the needle. Continue by knitting another stitch and passing the first over the new stitch till you are left with one stitch, remove this from needle an pass yarn through the loop and pull tight, cut off a handspan away from you knitting and then sew the end in.

general rule of thumb, an adult scarf takes 3 x 50g balls of wool, childs may take from 2 - 3 50g balls. Based on 20 stitches width on size 8 pins.

hope that helps.

If you lived close enough i would happily teach you lizzie.

Now I remember why I can't knit! MH, I love you (and I know you really know what you're talking about) but eh?! I know it'd make sense if I concentrated and paid attention but, er, I think I'll stick with weaving for now! :-)

ok poor me..
am using size 1 needles, and am nearly through my 2nd ball of wool... 50g stuff.... she is only little though.. started off with 20 stitches, but the wool is a git and now i have progressed to about 30 ish..

tis actually much easier than it sounds. Would rather show people than write instructions as when you write it down it looks complicated.

My sister has apparently got natty a small loom for christmas so now i need to learn to weave as well.

:hysterical3: as if i would laugh at you.

what wool are you using? if you want to get back down to 20 just knit 2 stitches together every 5 stitches till you have got back down to 20. It may ba an oddly shapped scarf but it has been made with love so tell anyone who laughs to sod off unless they can do better.

Weaving is fab, depending on what kind of loom is it you can tablet weave, it's evil until you get the hang of it then it's easy!

Btw, your instructions were fab, my brain is not however fab! :-)

aw wish id known that a while ago! i didnt know you could do that..

see basic beginner me! I can just about plain stitch (which i have since learnt is called garter stitch) and sort of pearl stitch too...

This whole thing started as HAz wanted a scarf and so we went looking for one, couldnt find one she liked for less than about £15 so i said we would look for needles (25p charity shop) and wool (99p per ball in wilkos!) hence me trying to make one. Ben and Fern are so thrilled with the idea that they want one too!

wool is:
fancy yarn circle knits to chunky and mohair 32% nylon and 68% polyester.. is that what you meant? :hysterical3::hysterical3:

yup thats what i meant. I am doing a lot of scarves in that atm. looks good when finished. phone me if you get stuck doing the others. garter stitch is fine as you wouldn't see the different effects of the different stitches in that yarn anyway.:icon_biggrin:

Wendy ive deleted you phone number, can you resend at some point please !

Can i ask a silly question? (yes another of them!) with

"curly wurly" wool, is it still just a garter stitch or would you garter stitch then purl a line?

Emmie
28-10-2007, 12:03 PM
That's fantastic Suzi! Who cares if it's a strange shape, Hazel obviously loves it and lets face it, it's far better than anything you'd find in the shops!

Looking forward to seeing your pics MH :-)

Ok Here goes.

I will send you my number by PM in a bit.

I would just garter stitch to be honest, you wouldn't see any difference if you did it in stocking stitch (plain row followed by a purl row). If you were using double knit I would say have a go at stocking or even a rib knit 2 purl 2.

guess what? I have learnt a new stitch today at Kates - spider stitch! It grows so much faster! WOOHOOO

mummyhill

Tell me more, I've not heard of spider stitch.

suzi
28-10-2007, 10:58 PM
oo well you do the normal beginning as garter stitch but instead of wrapping the wool round and through you wrap it round both needles, then go round and through as normal! then finish the stitch.. works well..
