View Full Version : What’s your (self care) ‘thing’ today?
We often talk about self care on the forum, but I’ve noticed we haven’t been particularly proactive about discussing what we’re going to do to look after ourselves. So, I wondered if it’d be good to start a discussion where we each come up with one self care ‘thing’ that we’ll try to do each day.
So mine for today:
I won’t obsessively check the forum after 11pm tonight (blush)
What’s yours (please don’t leave me hanging)?
For me personally today was helping a mate out with her dogs. It’s something I’ve committed to for a week and I know that doesn’t sound like self care to most, but I love dogs and having time with non-humans is huge for me. I get to help someone else while helping myself too.

I take it you didn’t manage this? If not, so sorry, love….. did you manage other ways to self care yesterday?
I’m working this morning, then got a blood test, so this afternoon is going to involve napping and reading my book (biography of Jane Austen by Lucy Worsley - as recommended by Jaq)

I've taken things very easy today because I still have a bit of a driving hangover from Saturday. Thank goodness it suited Aisling too, because she is still tired from her Harry Styles concert on Saturday. They didn't get home until 5am.
I’m having my nails done today - and thinking bright orange and bright pink!

A long walk, and permission to just think about the next 15 mins
Self care is very personal. A quick google found a lot of tips that I’d never do (Switch off your smartphone for 24 hours (ha). Write a list of compliments to yourself (way too cringey). Do a jigsaw puzzle (not a clue - even the kids’ ones growing up were beyond me…)). But there are also loads that would help me (take a walk in nature. Declutter social media. Breathe….)
There’s no point trying to do something that doesn't work for you. Can you take an idea that suits you, today, and give it a go?
Today I ignored my alarms. Felt good to just wake up naturally.
Self care has gone awry for me lately. But, today I had to cancel a hospital appointment (got a cold), and, rather than doing some uni work instead, I’ve decided to spend the day chilling with some cross stitch, or maybe a good book

Self care has been sadly lacking just lately but hoping to do some more on my nephew's blanket later. I mean he's only 10 months old so it's not like I'm behind...
Self care today - one of my favourites! Mum’s visiting today (party)

Have fun!
I love the connection you have with your parents.
My self care is a bit of a challenge today. I need to shower and get to my art session. I feel like I don’t want to do anything right now but I know I need to get out and do something worthwhile.

I made myself swim, even though I didn't want to leave the house. It definitely helped

Lunch of gammon and egg at the Boundary Stone mmm tasty.
SMum I like a bit of plumbing nothing like the thrill of tightening up a compression fitting to stop a leak, well simple things amuse simple minds (rofl)

Ooo we gave our plumber a puzzle to work out..... blocked pipe in the heating system.... but which one and where?
Anyway, he's great and has us sorted
I found this today. While there’s a lot of information, just looking at a section at a time could be really helpful.

I did a naughty thing but it has brought me great pleasure. I bought a new pair of Sennheiser M2 headphones. They are so comfortable and the sound quality is just when you expect with high end cans. One happy bunny today listening to MJ blasting in my ears.

A great resource
“Self-care is the little things we do to look after our own mental health
The important thing with self-care is not what it looks like, but what it does for you and how it makes you feel. When it comes to self-care it's not one thing, it's your thing.” Young Minds

Sorry self care didn’t happen so much but I completed my sober challenge which the last few hours were harder that anyone could’ve predicted so I guess staying away from alcohol while in a pub during a stressful and upsetting situation deserves some kind of recognition.

I've been crazy busy today. I go away tomorrow to serve on a retreat for 4 days. Getting last minute things for my team. Think I would be more excited about it if I was feeling better in myself. I'm leading a team but they are all great so hopefully they won't need too much direction
Try to get some rest, please….
I attended an Autism West Mids presentation on Autism and Anxiety. Apparently 50% of people diagnosed with Autism also suffer with Anxiety. I’m actually surprised the figure isn’t higher.
“ WHAT HAVE YOU ACHIEVED?
I don’t know about you but when I’m in one of these ruts, I tell myself I’m useless and will never achieve anything.
If that’s you, go and write down 10 things you’ve achieved. They might be HUGE things or small, but as long as you feel proud about them, put them on the list.
Remind yourself that you CAN do it and you ARE amazing.” (https://www.ktmy.co.uk/20-self-care-ideas-for-chronic-illness/)
Hmmm maybe we should change the Friday Fab 5s to tremendous 10s ;)
10!? That’s a huge challenge in itself. I’ll have a think and come back to it.

No panic attacks but everything else is all too familiar lately. I had all the best intentions today when I got up at 6.20am. I took the bins out, made breakfast did all the washing up, run the hoover over and by 9.30am I was back in bed feeling sorry for myself again. I was hoping this doing something productive would make me feel good about myself, but instead of feeling good about what I’ve done I look at the things I still need to do and feel totally overwhelmed and end up shutting down. I spent all of yesterday in bed recharging and for what? I manage a couple of small tasks and I’m drained again.
But you managed those tasks. That’s a win
I keep trying to tell myself that. It’s better than nothing, but somehow it doesn’t feel like enough

I was out yesterday lunchtime and last night, so it was a busy day for me. The best I could do for self care was to sleep in the afternoon. Sometimes the simplest tools in your kit can be the most effective…..
