We all have our flaws. He deals with mine, I deal with his. It's not always easy, and sometimes I really Wonder what on earth are we doing. But then taking a step back and looking at everything again, we are doing the Best we can with what we have, and actually I feel we are doing pretty fine. I love this guy. He is smart, witty, fun and gentle. His sense of humour matches mine. He is wonderful with my Kids. He works hard to make life good for us all, and he is very understanding with my mental health. Some couples are like Prince Charming and Princess Lovelylocks. Well... We are Mr and Mrs Potatohead. And yea we love Toy Story movies

OldMike

I love toy story too :) being Prince Charming and Princess Goldilocks isn't all it's cracked up to be the main thing is you and Le dude make each other happy and that's what counts.

You've got a smashing guy there Sissy...they're hard to find. But I have a good guy too. Never loses it with me, and puts up with MY mental health too. I'm not easy to deal with at times but he's still loving and kind. All of us ladies here seem to be lucky with our men folk. How are the hens doing?

Sissy
02-10-18, 07:16 PM
We have now 6 that lay eggs, 6 young hens, 2 baby chick and that funny rooster. All doing fine.

I am happy for every one having a loving and supportive partner in life. It means so much. And can change so much. And every one deserves happiness.

Yay! You're going to have a whole flock soon!

Sissy
06-10-18, 11:35 AM
This is my flock! Bantams, silkies, hylines and mixes. Gotta love them all.

They’re gorgeous!

Flo
06-10-18, 04:39 PM
They're beautiful sissy! Beautiful ladies. How do you find the Silkie..easy to handle? I'm picking my birds up tomorrow. I'm really hoping they can climb the ramp to bed at night!

Sissy
06-10-18, 05:01 PM
Silkies are abit... Ehm. Simple. They lay eggs for few week, and then start sitting even in an empty nest hoping to be mommas. They are sweet and kind and everything. But can't fly for their life, and are clumsier than other breeds with normal feathers. I am definitely loving bantam kochins. They are just as motherly and sweet as silkies, but smarter. Yet I would never change any of these away. A silkie or two in flock gives you some colour and extra laughs.

06-10-18, 06:13 PM
Is that in the house that you and Le Dude built for them? They all look happy!

Sissy
08-10-18, 05:19 AM
Yea it is. They seem to be very happy hens, and Le dude built a glorious place for them. I assisted as much as I could, but he is the magic maker.

Suzi
08-10-18, 10:34 AM
I think you're both magic makers by giving them such a lovely home filled with love!

OldMike
08-10-18, 10:41 AM
I like the fact you have a mixture of different types of hens. Is one of the hens a boss, a number one hen the others look up to?

Sissy
09-10-18, 12:27 PM
They have a pecking order, and looks like there are two boss ladies. Wanda and Merida. Rest are hard to figure out, but our rooster is very nice to them all. His favourite hen is Nasu, she is abit bossy too, but Wanda and Merida won't let her boss around that much. In General they are pretty balanced flock. Lowest in the pecking order are those very young 6, but that's how it goes in the chicken world. They get to eat and sleep and drink without hassle. Just have to wait abit or take the lower roosts.

Suzi

I love that you know all their personalities!

Paula

That’s so cute :)

Sissy

Cuteness overload!

They grow so fast! Almost 3 weeks old, and they are so cute I am going to lose it! First one is a little girl, second is a little boy. Le dude named them Batman and Elsa, since one of the bigger ones was not "Elsa enough". He is funny.

Flo
12-10-18, 09:37 AM
I love your photos sissy...aren't they gorgeous! My girls have been with us for nearly a week now. I'm going to get in touch with the lady I bought them from. Two of them are doing a lot of scratching!.....I'm not that good at turning them upside down and looking for things! But if it's lice they didn't get them here!! I'll need to get some powder that she recommends. Why is it that they can't invent a Spot-On for chickens? There's stuff for racing pigeons that only requires a drop on the back of the neck...and some poultry owners use it on their flock..however I'm not too sure about it. What do you use?.....our weather is appalling so they're under cover at the moment. How are you doing today?

Suzi
12-10-18, 10:07 AM
I love Batman and Elsa! They are amazingly cute!!

Paula

Cuteness overload especially batman (maybe because he has super powers :) )

Sissy
12-10-18, 04:40 PM
There is a liquid called ivomec. Also stuff called stronghold is used for poultry here. Those things kill everything inside and outside the bird, just be very very careful with dosing. Ash, and powder called drymaxx are used for lice and ticks, put it where your birds take dust baths. There is also a spray for lice, colombine spray. Hope this helps you abit Flo. I am happy you have birds of your own!

I am doing quite fine, and my birds keep me going even when I feel like poop.

Suzi
12-10-18, 07:24 PM
Do you have any plans for the weekend?

Sissy
12-10-18, 08:17 PM
We plan to cook with friends, and my dad is visiting. On Sunday I go riding with another friend, and the kids have fall break from school whole coming week. We probably work on henhouse some more. Final touches and cleaning up around it

Suzi
12-10-18, 09:27 PM
My children have the following week off for 1/2 term! I can't wait! I love having them at home!

Flo
13-10-18, 09:33 AM
Thanks for that Sissy. You've been very helpful. Your birds are seriously lucky to have you as their mum!....they're very entertaining aren't they? I look forward to seeing photo's of the coop etc., when it's complete. Truly a des. res.!! Have a good day love.

Sissy
13-10-18, 06:09 PM
Thanks Flo... That means alot. I took a full bucket of ash from fireplace to henhouse, my girls were bathing in it for hours. If you have a fireplace, or any of your friends or neighbours has, take the ashes to your Ladies. They will appreciate!

Paula
13-10-18, 06:26 PM
Ashes? Really? They’re funny creatures, aren’t they ;)

Suzi
13-10-18, 07:41 PM
We have lots of little wild birds who also really like to bath in ash ;)

Sissy
14-10-18, 04:55 AM
Ash kills ticks and lice so they benefit alot of it

Flo
14-10-18, 06:28 AM
Morning Sissy!....Thats a great idea! we have a wood burning stove so I'll empty the ashes into a box or something. Do you put the ashes into their enclosed run or do you put it outside where they roam? My enclosed run isn't huge but it's covered with a purpose made waterproof sheet at the moment because of the wet weather. If it rains the ashes will turn to mud outside I suppose! Are you having a good time with your dad staying?

OldMike
14-10-18, 11:45 AM
I've noticed birds in my garden like to have a dry dust bath, not much chance of that at the moment with all the rain here though.

Flo put the ashes in a tray under cover otherwise I'll be a mud bath, I'm sure Sissy will put us right on this :)

Flo
14-10-18, 03:25 PM
I don't plan to put any ashes out unless it's a sunny day. I'll put it under cover in their enclosed run otherwise. They're happily roaming around the garden at the moment. They're quite comical!

Sissy
14-10-18, 05:58 PM
Put it either in the henhouse or some where else it stay dry. I mix sand, sawdust and ash in 1:1:1 ratio in an old tire. It makes a great bath tub for your birds

Sissy

Tiana says good morning!

This is how she greeted me when I went to do my morning check up and collect first eggs. Could she be more a diva ?

Flo
17-10-18, 12:01 PM
Good morning Tiana!!......isn't she lovely? Last night I dreamed that all of my girls had laid huge eggs!!. When I woke up I was quite disappointed:s At the moment they are pecking away for worms and other delicious morsels. They really are entertaining aren't they? Have a good day Sissy.xx

Sissy
17-10-18, 01:39 PM
She is a very pretty girl, bantam kochin is her breed. She should start laying soon, but we are still waiting. She has lovely feathered feet, they make me smile every time I see her going on with her chicken business. You too have a wonderful day!

Suzi
17-10-18, 02:17 PM
She couldn't be more of a diva or a Princess if she tried! She's amazing!

OldMike

My two Pekin bantams have feathered feet too!...They're muddy little feathered feet at the moment! I've just given them their tea....corn mix. They'll be in bed soon I expect. It's getting dark and murky. Have a nice evening sissy.xx

Hope you can sometime show some pictures Flo, I am so curious to see a real photo of those. I think I have only seen a pencil drawing and what you find from Google. I was hoping to get a mille fleur or two one day.

Aww...they're lovely!...I introduced my girls to corn on the cob today...they were frightened of it at first but now they're totally in love with the stuff. My new chiropodist breeds chickens and told me what sort of treats she gives hers.

Sissy
24-10-18, 05:41 AM
Awesome, if she has great tips I'd love to hear them as well. Do you cook those corn cobs? I gave a whole cabbage to mine, and they went nuts over it!

OldMike
24-10-18, 10:14 AM
Elsa and Batman Chicks with Attitude would make a good title for a movie :)

No you don't have to cook them sissy. Just take the leafy bits off the corn and the chickens will do the rest! They all devoured the sweet corn and bounded out of their coop this morning like greyhounds!! Well she was saying that most vegetables they love...including..stalk and green bits of a cauliflower, cabbage leaves tied to the inside of their run..a little higher than usual as when they jump up for a mouthful it's good exercise. The same with thick broccoli stalks. They'll kill for strawberries! Even if it's just the bits you cut off the top with the little leaves attached. Blueberries, grapes. She says it's comical to watch them run off with a grape in their beaks!! Seeds from sunflower hearts - maybe when they're a little older so they can manage the seeds. Oh, and melon. They love melon. Again, remove seeds if they're too big. There's also a mash they can have. She gives it to her hens in the winter..I'll ask for the recipe. Helps to keep them warm. But again it's a treat, not a daily thing. Her hens also like quiche!!...the pastry bits! How are yours coming along?

Sissy
24-10-18, 04:09 PM
I was reading about fermented chicken food you can make at home in a bucket... I think I will take my time to do that. And also some where was a 7 step instruction for barley and oats sprouts. That sounds doable even in here where temperatures drop really low during winter

Suzi
25-10-18, 09:05 AM
My Grandma always kept chickens and she always made her own food by boiling potato peelings....

Paula
25-10-18, 09:49 AM
How are you doing, lovely?

Sissy
26-10-18, 04:57 PM
I feel like I'm the butt of the worst joke in history saying this... But my dog ate my glasses, and I am almost blind without. At home I can manage somehow, but leaving the house is a nightmare. We need to drive to another town tomorrow to see if my glasses can even be fixed.. Other than that, all fine. Chicken, fine. Kids, fine. Le dude, fine. Life, lovely. Just reminds me how dumb have I been hating my glasses so much. They liberate me, whole world is open when I have them. Now I deal with this horrendous head ache and am afraid my own backyard.

Jaquaia
26-10-18, 06:45 PM
I should have started wearing glasses when I was 12, my teachers didn't even know until I was 16 and in my final year of school!!! And then I only started wearing them because my eyes had gotten so bad that I couldn't see clearly more than 15cm in front of me so I can relate to this so much.

OldMike
26-10-18, 06:55 PM
Sissy I'm laughing at "The dog ate my glasses" when I know I shouldn't as I'm as blind as a bat without them, my eyesight is probably similar to Jaq's.

I've 2 pairs of reading glasses, 2 pairs of intermediate glasses, 2 pairs of distance glasses and finally one pair of distance glasses which darken in the sun.

Paula
26-10-18, 07:14 PM
(panda) I really hope they can be fixed tomorrow

Suzi
26-10-18, 08:06 PM
I hope you get them sorted lovely! I know how much I need and rely on mine!

Sadrobin
27-10-18, 02:04 AM
I like to sleep. Its my favourite thing to do. I have wonderful exciting dreams that I always want to return to if I wake up. Reall life hurts you. It is hard work and makes me ill.sleep away those mornings!

Sissy
27-10-18, 11:29 AM
No fix. But some first aid solution so they are somehow wearable, and new contacts. So I am set till I can afford new glasses.

Suzi
27-10-18, 02:27 PM
Oh no! Sorry they couldn't be fixed, but glad that you've got them wearable and new contacts.

Mmmm they are little aren't they :)

Sissy
29-10-18, 01:04 PM
Yea.. Haha! Like quil eggs! Or how you call them in english? Eggs get bigger with time, but these are so cute, how can I even think about eating them?

Yea.. Haha! Like quil eggs! Or how you call them in english? Eggs get bigger with time, but these are so cute, how can I even think about eating them? Awww..they're beautiful!!!...how old are your silkies... I think mine are about 20 weeks. Yay for silkies!!

Sissy
30-10-18, 06:11 PM
One is 19 weeks, other 21 weeks. Bantam kochin is also 19 weeks. She is not laying yet. Not sure if the younger silkie is either, I have only seen the older one in nest

Flo
30-10-18, 07:03 PM
Oh!! well that's quite young isn't it? They all obviously love where they are. Lovely. I hope maybe one of mine will lay an egg soon. Fingers crossed!

Sissy
30-10-18, 08:58 PM
Well they mature at their own place, so they lay eggs when they are ready. Maybe this one is fast ready. But I gotta check again... Maybe I counted wrong. Silkies do start laying at 5 to 6 months, or so I was told

Flo
31-10-18, 06:08 AM
I don't think there are any strict rules. Like you say, they'll lay when they're ready. How many silkies do you have?

Sissy
31-10-18, 01:59 PM
2 silkies. And bantam kochin, one hen one rooster

Flo
31-10-18, 06:20 PM
I have one silkie (Daphne) 1 Polish (Polly) and 2 Pekins (Dot and Lavinia)..they're all in bed now..all cuddled up together. It's going to be a long winter for our hens isn't it?

Sissy
31-10-18, 07:47 PM
Highest likely. We already have snow here, so my hens get out for just a short moment every day. But they seem to enjoy that moment greatly. When the temperature drops under - 5°C I am keeping them inside all day
