I am a 61-year-old woman and have suffered low-level to medium depression from the age of 13. I had years of psychotherapy in my 20s which helped considerably. However, since the age of 50, I would say I have been slowly sliding back into greyness. Not sure why - but the changes in hormones don't help! Although I am married with a family, I also feel I have been isolating myself socially and am worried about the years ahead. Would very much value talking to others in the same position!

Hi and welcome to one of the friendliest, most welcoming places on the internet! (Yes, probably biased but it's still true!)
Do you know why you are isolating yourself more? Have you spoken to your GP about the way that you are feeling?

Hi Suzi, thanks! When I was younger I used to make friends really easily. It just feels like I have lost the knack. I've been really bad at keeping in touch with people I used to know and assume they have sort of given up on me. So I think it's low esteem basically and lack of mojo. No, I haven't really spoken to my doctor but wondering now if I should seek help. I think one of the things that spurred me to come here were the findings on the recent study on antidepressants. I have always avoided them because of the bad press they got and it would feel like copping out to me. Now, i'm wondering whether they would help lift my mood and help get me out of the door more.

I really think that you should see your GP and I promise you that taking meds is definitely not "copping out!" Would you think that taking insulin was copping out to someone with Diabetes? Or anti inflammatories to someone with arthritis? It's no different.....

Why not send a few people a "we haven't been in touch for a while, how are you?" kind of text or email or FB message?
