I'm not sure I can commit this year. I love Nano though!
I've stuck this thread too :)

I'd not heard about this until a couple of days ago! I dunno yet... Are you doing it Jaq?

I am. I'm going to start it today. I've never made the 10,000 words yet but it gives me something to focus on.

It's brilliant fun! I love it. Planning on doing it next year ;) Unless I can persuade myself to "have a go" for this year lol...

I think I've got about 7000 words written on my novel already, about 1000 a chapter, which doesn't really seem like its enough, its like 4 pages per chapter?

It's not about how much makes a chapter... Some books have longer ones and some have less... If it feels right then it is right!

I suppose the answer then is that it doesn't feel right. I think I move things too quickly. The reader needs a chance to breathe.

So get your ideas down, put it away for a few weeks and re-read it. That way you're looking at it with fresh eyes. Try and read it from a readers perspective itms? And not as a writer. Make notes on what you think needs changing and then edit it. You'll be able to slow down where you think it needs slowing down and remove any bits you think are unnecessary.

Stephen King's "On Writing" is a very good book to read for writing tips.

Thanks Jaq, I'll check it out. I used to do a lot of writing when I was younger but recently I just decided I had to get this novel down on paper because it was driving me crazy being in my head. I know the plot like the back of my hand.

I'm the same. Got my characters planned, world created, back story. I even have a societal hierarchy established! I'm too critical though and constantly delete rather then go back an edit. And that's after completing the first year of a creative writing degree!

A creative writing degree? That's so cool :)

That *is* cool!

It was awesome! Unfortunately I had to drop out because of finances/being ill but hoping to go back and complete it.

Jaq, how have you been getting on with this? I abandoned my first book and started writing a second one!

Jaquaia

Failed miserably! Been too tired to focus properly.

Yeh me too. I've been trying to get into the zone this evening, get back into my character's mindset by listening to some music. I've got all the main chapters written (beginning, middle and end) but now I need the stuff inbetween those points! And in some ways they are a lot harder to write, to capture the right tone.

I'm determined to give this a proper go this year! Hopefully it will give me something to focus on
